Why should we care about what is in our water?

Health is wealth, and knowing what we are putting into our bodies, particularly when it comes to water, the most precious, life-giving element, is so important and yet often ignored. It is not about what you can see in your water, but what you cannot. Just because the water seems clean, does not mean it is safe. There are harmful microscopic residues of viruses, bacteria, parasites, pathogens and trace chemicals, things that could build up in the body and affect our health. Knowing your water is as important as drinking eight glasses a day.

Truly filtering water instead of making it look nice

Filtering water is more than just making the water look pretty and taste-neutral by removing elements from it. Some filters are little more than glorified sieves. They will take out sediment and chlorine, but do not eliminate many of the harmful microscopic elements that cause harm. JoJo uses Disruptor technology in their filters. This combines three water treatments into one product. It uses a process of electro adsorption, which creates an electrical field activated by water. The process attracts and removes more contaminants than any other filter on the market. It’s the same technology that NASA uses.

What about bottled water? Or boiling it?

Boiling water is effective, but prohibitively expensive as it uses energy to heat up and then cool down. Bottled water is a burden on the environment. Climate change is a real challenge. While bottled water is healthy, it brings with it the issues of plastics and microplastics, which strangle our oceans and which have even been found in tap water. It was reported in Daily Maverick in 2018 that microplastics, which are smaller than 5mm in size, were found in tap water in Johannesburg and Pretoria. Toxic chemicals could enter the body attached to microplastics. Then there is the carbon footprint of bottled water through transporting it on trucks and ships around the world. Being aware of the journey of that bottle of water you are drinking might make you think again.

Is the quality of South African tap water not adequate?

South African tap water is safe to drink, but it varies from location to location. In some rural areas, the quality may be less than in urban areas.

In January 2017, the latest Blue Drop (water quality) report by the Department of Water and Sanitation showed that, of the 1 036 municipal drinking water systems evaluated, only 44 complied with Blue Drop status standards.

Although this marks a decline in our water quality since the previous Blue Drop report, the results are not as bad as they sound. South African tap water is still safe to drink.

The report did, however, indicate growing concerns about water quality in South Africa. This is especially relevant to those dependent on borehole water, as groundwater contamination is rife.
