Down to the wire Amelia and Darryl Caalsen’s sociable front stoep in Paarl is decorated with second-hand treasures, including an ornamental piano (it can no longer be played) and a vintage wire locker packed with braai wood.
“The locker works brilliantly! I can store all our wood neatly and it dries out at the same time,” says Amelia, who bought the locker at Colonial Antiques in Gqeberha. The stoep gets morning sun and it’s lovely and cool again in the afternoon, which makes it perfect for summer. On very windy days when the back garden is a no-go zone, the Caalsens braai in their Weber right here on the stoep. “No matter the season, we spend a lot of time in this space.”
