You will need
- 6mm plywood in the following sizes: two pieces of 160 x 230mm; one piece of 230 x 35mm
- black cotton cloth tape (gaffer tape or something similar)
- ring binder mechanism (we recycled one from an old ring binder file)
- drill with 3mm wood drill bit
- tubular rivets
- hammer
- “Family Recipes” template
- masking tape
- carbon paper
- pen
- small artist brush
- apple, cut in half
- Woodoc Gel Stain in the colour Ebony
- Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR Clear Matt
- paintbrush
- 100-grit sandpaper
- record cards

Here's how
1 Position the three pieces of plywood next to each other with the long sides facing each other. Place the small piece in the middle. Space them about 5mm apart and stick them together with the cloth tape
2 Position the ring binder in the centre of the back of the file and mark where the rivets will go.
3 Drill holes for the rivets on the marks you’ve made.
4 Use the hammer to secure the ring binder in place with the rivets.
5 Position the “Family Recipes” template on the front of the file cover and trace the lettering with carbon paper and a pen.
6 Carefully paint the letters with the Woodoc Gel Stain.
Use the apple half to stamp the shape of an apple under the words you’ve painted. Add an outline and stalk with the artist brush.
8 Once the Woodoc Gel Stain has dried completely, seal the file, inside and out, with three coats of Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR Clear Matt; let it dry between coats. Lightly sand after coats one and two have dried. Do not sand again after the last coat.
9 Punch holes in the record cards and write your favourite family recipes on them to keep in your new file.
