1. Make sure the accessories required for a recipe fit comfortably in the basket of your air fryer before you start cooking. You don’t need to invest in special equipment; ovenproof silicone and ceramics, non-stick bakeware, Pyrex, enamel and even certain cast-iron pots can be used safely.

2. Use oil sparingly to prevent burning, facilitate browning and add flavour. No additional oil is required for naturally fattier foods such as sausages or meatballs. For battered, floured and crumbed recipes, spray or brush the basket and food lightly with olive, avocado or vegetable oil. Invest in an olive oil spray, fill a reusable oil spray bottle, or simply use a brush to apply cooking oil.

3. For consistent results, do not overload the air fryer basket; never make it more than two thirds full. It is preferable to cook food in batches in a single layer so the air can circulate.

4. To ensure even browning, toss or turn food halfway through cooking time. To prevent overbrowning, ensure that there’s sufficient distance between the surface of the food and the element, otherwise cover it with foil. Avoid using baking paper as a cover – it might catch alight.

5. ‘Loose’ seeds and seasonings should be avoided as these will fly around inside the appliance and burn.

6. To extend the life of your air fryer, clean it after every use. Let it cool down for about30 minutes before you clean it and be careful with the non-stick coating. Do not use abrasive cleaning materials or metal kitchen utensils. Find out which parts of the air fryer can be washed, and which should simply be wiped down. The pan and basket of a Philips Airfryer are dishwasher safe; refer to the user manual for instructions.

7. Not only is an air fryer ideal for quick and easy health-conscious cooking, it’s also a great reheating tool. Use yours to return pizza, crumbed items and pastry to their former crisp glory. Five minutes at 180°C is all that’s needed to reheat a slice of pizza!

8. Just like ovens, different air fryer models can give slightly different results. Use the cooking times as a guideline and if you’re unsure, check and adjust.
