If the only space you have for creating a garden is a small balcony, then take heart – you can still have greenery and colour. Make sure that the complex in which you live allows plants, and that there aren’t rules which specify which plants you may have.

Be sure to check how much weight your balcony can hold – terracotta and ceramic pots are much heavier than fabric bags or plastic pots.

Make the most of the space you have by also using hanging baskets to add interest at eye level. Remember that the higher up your balcony, the more wind your plants will be exposed to. Use a heavy-duty wire trellis to support climbing plants and to create a living privacy screen.
