Adair Liebenberg of Vierfontein writes: I have a new rose bush and two others in pots that I would like to plant in the garden. What is the best position for them? It gets very hot here in summer and very cold in winter.
Ludwig replies: In very hot areas, roses do best with plenty of morning sun (at least six hours) and some shade in the afternoon. They don’t mind very cold winters as they originate from the Northern Hemisphere where they go dormant in winter and will even survive snow.
May and June are ideal months for transplanting roses from pots into the garden, as well as for planting new roses because they are not growing as actively and will not suffer from root stress.
