Yvonne de Villiers of Durbanville writes: My white ‘Iceberg’ roses are turning pink – I’ve never seen that happening. I have a single orangey-red rose growing among them (see pic). Could that be the reason? What should I do?

Ludwig replies: When the white blooms of ‘Iceberg’ roses take on a flush of pink it is usually in late autumn when the nights are cool. It also happens in slightly shady positions and it might have to do with the quality of water or soil. After lots of rain, the chemistry in the soil changes ever so slightly. Other coloured rose blooms change in intensity all the time, but it is not as noticeable as with a white rose.
