It’s a common problem for many homeowners: a long, narrow area on the side of the house where the washing line, garbage bins and water tanks are usually located.

This was also the case for Petra and Schalk Krusche on their otherwise gorgeous property on the Steenberg Golf Estate in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Although their back garden is north-facing and gets lovely sun in winter and shade in summer, it included an area that was completely underutilised.
