The secret behind this kitchen’s fresh look? Spray paint!

The old melamine cupboard doors were cleaned with lacquer thinners, after which two coats of Tjhoko Paint were applied with a spray-paint gun. Dilute the paint as follows: nine parts paint to one part water. Each coat must dry completely before the next layer is applied (at least 20 minutes).

The surfaces were subsequently sealed with two coats of Tjhoko Paint Clear Glaze diluted in the usual ratio: three parts Glaze to one part cooled boiled water. Apply the Glaze with a damp microfibre cloth, preferably after the paint has dried overnight. The Glaze gives the cupboards a washable and UV-resistant finish.

WHERE Waverley, Pretoria

What to do about an old melamine kitchen that you can no longer bear? Instead of gutting it, paint it! Not only is it more cost-effective, but there’s much less mess – and thanks to Tjhoko Paint, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Mariska van de Wetering of Pretoria saysshe felt that her kitchen had become dated. When they built the house 14 years ago, the kitchen was finished with a whitewash technique, but by 2021 it was time for a change.

In fact, the Van de Weterings were having a stoep built on and the builder, Louis Borsje, suggested that they renovate the kitchen at the same time. As Mariska puts it: the kitchen didn’t really complement the new stoep.

Louis introduced Mariska to Connie Strauss and Mickey Botha of Micon Arts. These sisters specialise in paint techniques and painted the old melamine kitchen with Tjhoko Paint. Voila! With a new vinyl floor, trendy patterned tiles on the splashback above the stove and new countertops, this kitchen is ready for cooking and entertaining for another 14 years.
